PRESENTATION SKILLS, PUBLIC SPEAKING
& DEVELOPMENT

Public speaking is the act of speaking to an audience of people. 74% of people have a fear of public speaking, an anxiety known as glossophoboia. This statistic is consistent with the adage that one of the major fears that people have is public speaking, right up there with the fear of snakes, heights, and flying.

Every good presenter whom we have ever known admits to being nervous prior to delivering a speech or presentation; Tab Edwards -- a Water Group Principal who is a great presenter -- still get nervous before taking the stage to deliver a presentation; although you wouldn't know it. As with any other problem or challenge, if we can identify the causes of our speaker anxiety then we can begin to address the causes and, hopefully, improve our effectiveness at public speaking.

Over the twenty-plus years that we have been working with people on becoming more effective public speakers and delivering more effective presentations, we have found that the primary reasons people fear (or at least become uncomfortable with) public speaking include:

..The potential for failure by delivering a “bad” presentation or giving a “bad” speech
..Having everyone in the audience passing judgment on your performance
..Sharing information that the audience may believe or know to be incorrect
..Being the focal point and the center of attention before a group of strangers

If these are the primary contributors to our fear of public speaking – negatively impacting the style component of our presentation – and consequently, negatively impacting our ability to deliver the most effective talk possible, then addressing each of these fears should lead us to delivering “better,” more effective speeches and presentations.
